Students, Cell Phones and Social Networking

22 Jan

ImageHave you ever stopped and thought about what life would be like without the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Tublr and smart phones? I can tell you that even I feel left out with my old Sprint touch screen. I am not capable of having internet on my cell phone but I can still call and text with no problems, so why do I feel so left out? My generation is constantly on their iPhones and iPads while I am over here talking to my parents the “new-old fashioned” way. Now I’m not saying that I would’nt LOVE to have a new phone with all the new gagets but I simply am not ready to make that kind of commitment (or my bank account rather). Now free social networking sites on the other hand is a whole other story. I am fully committed to my Facebook and Twitter accounts. Maybe more than I should be. I find myself sitting on Facebook or Twitter when I should be doing homework or something productive almost on a daily basis. Why do we feel the need to know what is going on in our old aquaintence from elementary school’s life? Our parent’s generation had to call the house phone to even talk to a friend, while we can “creep” through all their pictures and know exactly what they have been up to for the past few years. Being a 20 year old College PR Student, I know that the Social Media will always be in my life and that this is only the beginning. I also know that It is my job to make sure myself and others use it properly. Reputations can be ruined on social networking sites, for example, Manti Te’o and his “phantom girlfriend” became wildly public for such a personal part of his life. Looking at how the internet and social networking sites have changed over the past 10 years makes me look forward and be hesitant to what we have in store for us in the future.

Because social media is of interest to you, this course is for you! I agree, social media has its good points and bad. It’s almost scary to think of what “the next” thing will be when Facebook has worn out. The drama!
